Interesting “Job” Postings
2It seems like just yesterday that the social media world was all aflutter over Tourism Queenslands “Best Job in the World” campaign (including me, check out my post about it from January 2009). I’ve since seen campaigns offering dream jobs ranging from “working” for a vineyard to “tweeting” for MTV and even traveling to Colorado to see snow for the first time (interestingly the SwowAtFirstSite.com page has been completely removed already). In a fit of inspiration I thought I’d do a quick survey of how the winners are doing by using a few Twitter ratings (I’m using the accounts promoted by the companies including the Murphy Goode account in which the “job” is already over):

I know that these people are doing a lot more that Tweeting, but I find it interesting to see, at least on one social network, a rudimentary gauge of reach (followers) and a self-described gauge of influence (Tweetlevel). Only in the case of MTV does it seem as though the person is really making inroads, at least on Twitter.
This fairly meager success hasn’t slowed companies from trying to leverage social mediaites by offering “jobs” or opportunities to be a “blogger”. Here’s a quick rundown of a few options:

What does this mean? I’m not sure, perhaps these sorts of contests are really successful and more companies are following suit because of the success? Or are companies not completely sure of what direction they should take in the social space and these sorts of promotions are relatively easy to create and manage? Or, is it a something else? How to Get a Job Working for a Ski Resort

Every so often I’m asked, “How can I get a job working for a ski resort?”
“It’s easy,” I answer “just look at the online application as it seems like there are always jobs posted.”
“No, no, I’d like to find a year round job doing something that doesn’t involve lifts, food and beverage or maintenance.” Btw, please don’t tell anyone I know who does this vital jobs i wrote this sentence!
“Well, if you’re looking at marketing, sales or most management opportunities at a ski resort, you probably need to get in line…”
Actually, I don’t think it’s quite that bad and if you know what you’re looking for, have the right skills and network, I think it’s quite possible to find your dream job at a ski resort. It will most likely take some persistance though. Here are my recommendations:
- Network, network, network. Some of the best jobs might never make it to the job listings, so make sure you know the people who do the hiring at the resort you think you’d like to work for.
- Following up with more networking, look for resort networks on LinkedIn and follow ski resort peeps on Twitter.
- Setup Google alerts to let you know when a job in your preferred area comes available, and follow the job boards at the Ski Area Management job board or at larger search sites like Coolworks and ResortJobs.com.
- Start small, if you’re still in college, find a way to help with your local ski or snowboard club. Another great place to start is with internships, I know several people who have moved from an internship directly into a year round opportunity.
- Be realistic, ski resorts, like do not have huge numbers of year round people. You may need to work seasonally until you find your niche.
If your dream ski resort job doesn’t work out, remember that there are lots of other jobs in resort destination areas, and most resort areas have good digital connections that might even allow you to work via telecommuting!

Cool job opportunity!

- Work with marketing team to develop and implement a detailed digital editorial calendar
- Create, produce and edit videos to achieve persona-based objectives
- Research, write and edit content that relate to snowsports, mountain lifestyle and family travel
- Assign articles and multimedia projects to team members and contracted freelancers (to include writers, photographers and videographers) and manage the process of distributing across the appropriate channel
- Work with marketing team to ensure timely and accurate publication of all content and ensure messaging is consistent with corporate objectives
- Produce content to be shared on social sites
- Produce content to fulfill media needs i.e. B-Roll video and stock photography

The Best Job in the World?
0While I might think that I have the best job in the world, the marketing people at Tourism Queensland have come up with what a very unique and timely campaign promoting what they say is “The Best Job in the World.” What they’re offering is actually a six month position that requires regular photo and video updates to a blog and pays a nifty AUD$150,000 (just over $100k US) it even includes a lovely sounding 3 bedroom home with private pool and airfare. Here’s their video promoting the job:
It’s a great concept and well executed, but what I really like is how they have such great timing what with the global economy stagnating and people flocking to job and other employment sites both online and offline where Tourism Queensland has posted ads promoting this ‘job’. Check out these samples I found online:
This brings up an idea, why don’t other businesses look to employment ads as a way to target business in unorthodox places – perhaps as a ski resort we could advertise openings for skiers and snowboarders in help wanted placements? Whether or not something like that could work, this approach by Tourism Queensland has certainly created a huge word of mouth campaign – over a thousand news articles within a week – and even crashed the web server that they were using to host the application site. I look forward to seeing how this campaign evolves over the coming months and I think that I’ll have to subscribe to the blogs’ RSS feed to see what the winner really thinks of their job come December!
